BusinessWeek Cites Brattle Study on Broadcaster Payment for Spectrum

A BusinessWeek article published on March 31, 2010 discusses the Federal Communications Commission’s plan to improve U.S. broadband Internet services by reclaiming about 40 percent of broadcasters’ spectrum, much of which is largely unused, and reallocating it for high-speed wireless purposes. The article cites a study by Brattle principal Dr. Coleman Bazelon that indicates that broadcasters stand to earn up to $27 billion if they are willing to give up the spectrum awarded to them by the government and auction it to wireless carriers.

According to the article, “IPhone-Weary TV Broadcasters Gear Up to Fight FCC for Airwaves,” many broadcasters are against this plan because they are counting on mobile TV, which will require spectrum, to supplement slumping advertising revenues.
