Economist and Nuclear Expert Alan Madian Joins Brattle as a Senior Advisor

The Brattle Group is pleased to announce that Mr. Alan Madian has joined the firm as a senior advisor.

Mr. Madian is an economist, management consultant, and investment banker with more than 30 years of experience as an expert witness, policy advisor, strategy and implementation consultant, and financial advisor. He has extensive experience in government and in the private sector, including energy economics and energy infrastructure development, international trade, mining economics, economic development, bankruptcy and financial restructuring, and urban development.

He provides clients with economic analyses of international and national markets, as well as specific industries and firms. He helps clients to develop new businesses, acquire and divest companies and divisions, and assess complex infrastructure investment decisions. In addition to his extensive experience in electric utilities and telecommunications, Mr. Madian has worked with clients in oil and gas production and distribution, financial services, manufacturing, mining, pharmaceuticals, real estate, and international trade. He has testified on energy and telecommunications policy and regulation, on damages and liability in commercial litigation and arbitration, on the determination of regulated rates of return and establishment of competition in regulated markets, and on the contractual allocation of risk.

Mr. Madian has conducted antitrust and market power analyses, testified in antitrust litigation, and served as an economic advisor to the United States Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust. He also served as economic advisor to a governor of New York, as deputy director of New York’s Economic Development Board, and as an economic/strategy and management counselor to the CEO of one of North America’s largest electric utilities. He has over a decade of experience as principal advisor to CEOs of nuclear utilities planning new construction and nuclear plant refurbishment. His responsibilities have included directing feasibility studies, contract negotiations, and testimony before legislative bodies and cabinet committees. He has directed studies, advised nuclear utilities seeking to purchase operating nuclear plants, and advised regulators and utilities seeking to determine nuclear and fossil stranded costs. He is the author of NucOptima™, a Monte Carlo nuclear refurbishment decision model.

Prior to joining Brattle, Mr. Madian was a director at LECG, a senior vice president at Putnam, Hayes & Bartlett/Hagler Bailly, and president and CEO of Lafayette Capital Corporation. He has served on the faculties of New York University, The London School of Economics, and the University of Rochester, and on the research faculty of Columbia University.
